Central Intake Admissions
All overnight guests are required to obtain a referral slip from Central Intake. Central Intake. is a program run by the David Busby Street Centre.
It was initiated in November 2004, and the partners in this program include Barrie Out of the Cold, the David Busby Street Centre, Salvation Army, Elizabeth Fry Society, Biin-nbaan Endyaang and Youth Haven.
Prior to 10 p.m., anyone seeking emergency shelter in the city of Barrie is required to attend Central Intake and, in the first instance, is directed to a funded shelter bed at one of the above agencies. If a bed is not available, a referral is made to the Out of the Cold program for an overnight stay.
After 10 p.m. it is the responsibility of the person seeking shelter to contact the Barrie Police Services for assistance, call: 725 7025 x 0 or go directly to the downtown office of the Barrie Police (next to the bus station). If there is no answer at the door, use the telephone on the outside wall. This telephone is linked directly to the Barrie Police Services main office.
Curfew at BOOTC is 7:30 p.m., anyone admitted after this time will be considered a Late Entry and will be subject to the conditions set out in the BOOTC Late Entry Policy.
The Central Intake program is overseen and financed by the County of Simcoe and the day to day operation is the responsibility of the David Busby Street Centre.
The intent behind having a central location for emergency shelter was two fold; firstly that anyone seeking shelter would be referred to a shelter bed if one was available; secondly, the contact with Busby staff ensured that help to find more permanent housing was offered in a timely fashion..
From 5:30 p.m. until 10 p.m: Registration is at the C.M.H.A. located at 15 Bradford St. Barrie
Directions: From the bus station on Maple St. continue on Maple towards the lake, take first right turn onto Simcoe Street. Continue along Simcoe Street to the junction of Bradford Street. The Canadian Mental Health Association buildings are two, single storey buildings at this junction.
Alternate route: Continue on Dunlop Street West to the junction of Bradford/ Dunlop. Turn left on Bradford Street. Canadian Mental Health Association building is on the East side of Bradford, at the junction of Simcoe and Bradford Streets.
As space is limited at the shelters it is strongly recommended that anyone seeking shelter does so before 7.00 p.m.
Guests of Out of the Cold are reminded that anyone seeking shelter after 7:00 p.m. will not be able to meet the BOOTC Curfew of 7:30 pm. Certain conditions do apply to those who continue to arrive after curfew. These conditions are outlined in the BOOTC Late Entry Policy. If further information is needed this can be obtained from the church coordinators.
